Welcome back to a new year of learning. It remains one of my most cherished times of year for a number of reasons. The weather becomes cooler, the school supplies are newer, and the enthusiasm as at the highest level of the year. All of that stuff... and football, apples, fall colors - but I digress.
Last year we made LearnPads work to the best of our abilities. Whether you realize this or not, we did more with this technology than most people on the planet. Yes. On... the... planet. Had the physical device not failed, we would still be using it this year. Alas, we are not. We made a change - enter iPad. After listening to teachers, hearing pitches from various companies, and exploring a collection of mobile education tablets, Hastings Public Schools decided to embrace the iPad. It is an experience most users are familiar with, a device that has a long history of reliability, and has easier access to the many thousands of educational applications. We choose to purchase iPad Minis because they are a more appropriate size for smaller hands, they are every inch a fully-functioning iPad, and they are better value for our budget. As we move into this school year, I will be provide numerous opportunities for teacher support and professional development. There will be before school, during school, and after school options that allow you to choose your own adventure and select what works best for you. I hope to create and share videos, tips, tricks, and other useful tidbits of information in a variety of ways. And finally, there will be the Integrationist Menu. A visual way to learn what is possible with iPad and other classroom technologies. With a quick glance and a click, you can see videos of real projects that are possible with your students.
